Greenkeeper's Update September 2020

Hello all,

First of all thank you from the Greenkeepers for your patience throughout the ongoing pandemic. We have had our challenges in dealing with the restrictions but we think that what we have in place currently (plastic pipe in holes, bagged and taped ball washers and no rakes in bunkers) is working well. Our aim for now is to keep both Courses in the best possible condition day to day for you all to enjoy during the second lockdown

Greens have had a fairly tough year weather wise going from a cold and wet winter into a two month drought then followed by fluctuating summer temperatures and rainfall. Despite this they are currently performing well with overall good grass coverage, a fair amount of speed and remain receptive. We have just applied our autumn fertiliser application last week (12.3.24+2.5Mg+Te for those who want to know) which will give them good health through to the New Year. The height of cut will slowly start to rise from now through to the winter working our way up from the current 3.25mm to 5mm, this will give the plant a well needed rest through the colder months when disease is prevalent.

Tees and Aprons have performed well this season with regular divotting taking place on the Tees and cutting in the dry in the afternoons. This winter we aim to solid tine the Tees at least once and ground break the main Aprons on the front 9 holes on Cottingham Parks, this followed up with a good Spring fertiliser will see them perform to their optimum in 2021.

The Fairways that received mole drainer and ground breaker treatment have recovered well following repair work to join the open lines back up, we will really see the benefit from this in the wet winter months when we should have better drainage on those holes. We are aiming to do the same on the front 9 holes on Cottingham Parks this winter and then solid tine the back 9. For Skidby Lakes we will be trialling the slitter we used on the range this last winter to see if we can make any improvement to the Fairways there. The issue we have there is there is a lot of sizeable subterranean debris that would cause a tiner or mole drainer a lot of damage very quickly. Because the slitter runs shallower we are hoping we can still make some impact with it for better surfaces next year.

We will shortly be looking towards our winter projects and outlining what we hope to achieve, once this is in place I will update you all further. If you ever have and questions or queries at all please feel free to contact me or ask when you see me out and about on the Course. Thanks again to all of you for the great feedback we’ve had and the support you’ve given.
